Modern Languages

Modern LanguagesThe Department of International Studies is home to faculty offering courses in a variety of modern languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Russian. The program in Modern Languages develops student competencies in the languages, literatures, and cultures of these language communities. Survey introductory courses are complemented by in-depth studies, providing opportunities to fulfill electives as well as to develop more specific interests of students of literature and culture, including film studies. Students can earn a B.A. in Modern Languages, with a concentration in French, German, or Russian. The Department also offers minors in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Russian.

The department insists on a high degree of competence in the language as the basis for all other options. In addition to classes at the College Station campus, the department offers summer study programs for credit in China, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, and Tunisia. Semester and full-year programs abroad are also available and encouraged. Many students elect to have a major or minor in a second field or second foreign language. Teaching certification is available to majors through the College of Education and Human Development.

The careful combination of foreign language courses, including study abroad and internships abroad, with other curricula enhances our students’ preparation for a variety of careers in business, industry, teaching and public service.
